Distracted Driving Initiative- All It Takes is ONE Moment

Distracted Driving Initiative – GREATER focus on SAFETY in our community

All it takes is ONE moment. Yes, a split second can change history, for the better or worse.

Community safety is a top priority and at the heart of what we do at Gallegos Sanitation Incorporated. So, we recently announced at our annual company bowling party that GSI is placing a greater emphasis on driver safety – especially in the area of DISTRACTED DRIVING. All of us, at some point, have been guilty of texting, drinking coffee, changing the radio, or trying to make a telephone call … while in the act of driving. At GSI, we’ve made the commitment that these behaviors are going to stop! The message at the bowling party was not only to our employees but also to the family members of our employees. We simply asked the families not to text, call, or put pressure on the employees if they do not answer (or text back) – as they follow our company policy to an even greater level. Yes, we need to have a zero tolerance for this type of activity.

Facing the Facts

Statistics show that a driver is four times more likely to be involved in a “crash” if distracted. Distracted driving is more than texting or using a cell phone. It also includes eating, drinking, putting on make-up, shaving, changing radio stations, etc. At GSI, we have launched a campaign to have ALL of our drivers focus on driving 100% of their time when operating a vehicle.

As part of our campaign, we are showing a video on distracted driving to all employees in our department safety meetings, revamped our policies on phone usage, and will provide a window cling as a reminder of the message … Don’t TRASH innocent lives, Pay attention when you DRIVE. We encourage you to share the video, “From One Second To The Next”, with your family, friends, and co-workers. The film addresses texting while driving and we feel it has a compelling message. We believe this video will inspire those who watch it to be more aware of their driving habits. We certainly want our drivers to provide a good example to the community by not being distracted in any way when driving and to operate our trucks in a SAFE manner at all times.
